Welcome to the Application Portal for the MacArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice Challenge. The Safety and Justice Challenge is a large-scale investment in reform, research, experimentation, and communications aimed at creating national demand for local criminal justice reform as a means of reducing over-incarceration in America. Twenty sites selected to participate in the planning phase of the Challenge are now working with a consortium of national experts, examining the ways their jails are being used, and devising reform plans that will reduce unnecessary jail usage without compromising public safety.
The Foundation will select ten Safety and Justice Challenge Network sites to receive a second round of grants in support of plan implementation. In making its selection, the Foundation will seek to identify the most promising jail usage reduction strategies and the most ambitious and credible plans for implementing those strategies, taking into account the overall quality of the site’s participation in the planning phase as well as the need to assemble a range of sites that are appropriately diverse and representative of the nation as a whole. To be considered for implementation funding, plans must be submitted to the Foundation by January 6, 2016. Sites will be notified of their selection by March of 2016. Sites not selected for implementation funding will receive support for continued participation in the Safety and Justice Challenge Network.
